TRINIDAD and Tobago maritime law specialist Nyree Alfonso is one of five commissioners to be appointed today to serve on an independent international commission of enquiry established by the Guyanese government to investigate the sinking of the MV Barima, as officials seek answers into one of the country’s worst recent maritime tragedies.Speaking with the Express yesterday, Alfonso said the commission’s primary objective was to determine exactly what led to the disaster and recommend measures to prevent a similar incident from occurring again.

“I wish we could bring back the dead, but we can’t. We have to figure out what went wrong and make recommendations in the hope that such a tragedy does not happen again,” Alfonso said.She explained that while the members had now been named to the five-member commission, they are expected to travel to Guyana today to be formally appointed before the enquiry begins.Alfonso, who practises in Admiralty and Maritime Law, said she has participated in several investigations involving fatalities at sea, although none on the scale of the MV Barima disaster.
