New Ombudsman Vui Clarence Nelson has pledged to strengthen public understanding of his office and protect the rights of Samoans as the country faces modern human rights challenges.
Vui was officially sworn in on Monday at the Tofilau Eti Alesana Building in Mulinuu.
In his remarks, Vui said good governance and human rights were the foundations of the Office of the Ombudsman, but acknowledged that many people did not fully understand its role.
“Well, that's going to change, starting from today,” he said. “We will try and ensure a better understanding of what we do to the people of Samoa.
“And we will always protect, zealously, their rights as people of this country, and as people of God.”
