Barely a month after turning pro, Jackson Koivun fended off a charge from world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and claimed his first PGA Tour victory with a final-round five-under 66 to win the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minn.Koivun, who turned 21 on May 23, kept his cool as Scheffler applied the heat with eight birdies in his final-round 63. The former Auburn star finished with five birdies of his own to card a four-day score of 25-under 259 and best Scheffler by three strokes.Jackson Koivun wins 3M Open in third start as a professional“I played a great round of golf today, definitely had some nerves coming down 18,” Koivun told CBS. “All throughout the crowd I kept hearing ‘Scottie’s coming, Scottie’s coming,’ and I just tried to tune that out and keep playing the golf I knew I could and was able to find some good putts down the stretch.”The second-place finish was Scheffler’s fifth runner-up finish of the year. He began the day in a tie for ninth place, six shots behind Koivun.
Koivun shot a 10-under 61 in Saturday’s third round, including a record eight-under 28 on the back nine, to surge into the lead and enter Sunday with a three-shot advantage over Emiliano Grillo and Ben Kohles.Hideki Matsuyama, Brian Harman, Chandler Phillips and Denny McCarthy finished in a four-way tie for third at 20-under 264.Koivun turned pro on June 22 following the U.S. Open, in which he finished in a tie for 23rd with a five-over 285 at Shinnecock Hills.
