July 26 (UPI) -- Brazil's foreign ministry has summoned Argentina's ambassador after inflammatory remarks delivered by Argentinian President Javier Milei about Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva over the weekend.
Argentinian diplomat Julio Bitelli must go to Brasilia on Sunday or early Monday to meet with Brazilian leaders in wake of Milei's harsh attacks on Lula during the national convention of Brazil's Liberal Party, or PL, in São Paulo on Saturday, diplomatic sources told the O Globo newspaper.
Milei used his speech to denounce what he called the "tragedy of socialism" in Latin America, singling out the Lula and Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court for intense criticism while praising PL presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro.
The Argentine leader hailed Bolsonaro as the only candidate who can stop Lula, saying that "there is no one else capable of stopping Lula" and his effect on the country or confronting criminal and drug trafficking organizations.
