JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Sunday congratulated Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai on the 179th anniversary of his country’s independence.
In cables carried by the Saudi Press Agency, King Salman wished Boakai continued good health and happiness, and wished the government and people of Liberia steady progress and prosperity.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is also prime minister, sent a similar message of congratulations to the Liberian leader.
Liberia, on West Africa’s Atlantic coast, is Africa’s oldest continuously independent country, having declared independence on July 26, 1847.
The nation traces its origins to the early 19th century, when the American Colonization Society began resettling free-born and formerly enslaved African Americans, along with Afro-Caribbeans, along the West African coast.
