Rescuers yesterday were searching for 17 missing people after a Vietnamese cargo ship carrying 62 sank during stormy weather in the contested South China Sea, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. Chinese authorities said the cargo vessel Khoi Nguyen 18 ran into distress in waters near Fiery Cross Reef (Yongshu Reef, 永暑礁) on Saturday night, state-run China Central Television (CCTV) said. Fiery Cross Reef is in the Spratly Islands (Nansha Islands, 南沙群島) and is controlled by Beijing, but also claimed by Taipei, Hanoi and Manila.

Vessels are seen in the waters around Fiery Cross Reef (Yongshu Reef) in the disputed Spratly Islands (Nansha Islands) in the South China Sea in a still image from video taken by a P-8A Poseidon surveillance aircraft provided by the US Navy on May 21, 2015.
