Box Office: ‘The Odyssey’ Soars to $639 Million Globally After Two Weekends, Including $140 Million in Imax

Christopher Nolan‘s star-studded adaptation of “The Odyssey” has surpassed $600 million globally after just two weekends of release.

The big-budget take on Homer’s 3,000-year-old epic, led by Matt Damon as the Greek king Odysseus, has generated $639.6 million worldwide, including $353.2 million at the international box office and $284.4 million domestically. It’s a staggering turnout for a sword-and-sandal adventure that’s nearly three hours long and rated R, underscoring the fact that Nolan is the most bankable director of his generation.

Over the weekend, “The Odyssey” generated $128.3 million from 81 overseas markets, a remarkable 10% decline in holdover territories. It’s the best second-weekend hold for a movie that opened above $100 million, according to Universal, which backed the $250 million-budgeted film. “The Odyssey” has already surpassed the international haul of this spring’s hit “Project Hail Mary” ($340 million) and now ranks among the top five highest-grossing Hollywood releases of the year — and that’s before opening in major foreign markets including China, Japan and Korea. Top-earning territories to date include the United Kingdom and Ireland with $46.3 million, France with $31.8 million, Italy with $28.8 million, Australia with $20.6 million and Germany with $20.4 million.
