India's star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won women's 48kg title on Sunday, bagging the maiden gold medal for the country in Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026.The Olympics medallist also rewrote the record books by setting new Commonwealth Games records in the snatch with a best lift of 85kg.Chanu earlier opened with an unsuccessful attempt at 82kg before clearing the weight in her second lift. She then successfully lifted 85kg in her final attempt to establish the new benchmark in the event. The gold medal adds to Chanu's remarkable Commonwealth Games record, having previously won titles at the 2018 Gold Coast and 2022 Birmingham Games.Earlier in the day, India narrowly missed another gold in weightlifting as Chanambam Rishikanta Singh settled for silver in the men's event despite producing a record-equalling effort in the snatch.Rishikanta finished with a combined total of 264kg (121kg snatch and 143kg clean and jerk). He broke the Commonwealth Games snatch record with a personal-best lift of 121kg, although Malaysia's Mohamad Aniq Kasdan matched the mark before producing a Games record total of 273kg (121kg snatch and 152kg clean and jerk) to claim gold.Rishikanta briefly led the competition after successfully opening with 143kg in the clean and jerk, but Kasdan responded with lifts of 145kg and 149kg to regain the advantage. Needing 151kg on his final attempt to reclaim the lead, the Indian completed the clean but failed to lock out the jerk, ending his bid for gold. Kasdan then capped off his campaign with a successful 152kg lift to seal victory, while Kenya's Joshua Mboya claimed bronze with a total of 260kg (115kg snatch and 145kg clean and jerk).(With inputs from ANI)
