Madurai Kamaraj University Faculty Association (MUFA) has renewed its demand for the immediate enforcement of the Tamil Nadu government order mandating a rotational system for Heads of Departments (HoDs).In its letter to the Commissioner of Collegiate Education P. Ponniah the forum has stated that while other prominent State institutions, including the University of Madras, Bharathidasan University, Bharathiar University, and Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, have successfully adopted the three-year tenure policy to ensure equitable leadership opportunities, MKU remains a notable holdout.According to MUFA, the prolonged retention of certain individuals as HODs for up to 15 years, despite faculty members being recruited on the same day and year, has fostered an administrative stagnation, bias, and a lack of transparency.The association highlighted that this practice routinely denies junior professors their rightful opportunities, creating an environment susceptible to personal vendettas and partisan decision-making.Furthermore, MUFA pointed out a persistent disregard for protocol, noting that current HODs frequently fail to hand over responsibilities to junior professors during periods of leave, which they term a direct violation of administrative norms.C. Muniyandi, general secretary, MUFA, emphasised that implementing the government’s three-year tenure guideline is crucial for restoring fairness, non-discrimination, and democratic processes within the university.He maintained that rotational leadership would dismantle monopolies of power, foster academic growth, and inject fresh perspectives and accountability into departmental administration across the campus.
