EXCLUSIVE: Everyone Active are under fire for cancelling a naturist group's long-running 44-year swimming and sauna session after claiming lifeguards wouldn't staff the pool08:36, 26 Jul 2026Angry naturists are considering legal action against leisure centre bosses for what they are calling "discrimination" after their naked swim session was cancelled after more than 40 years.‌Around 200 members of Northampton Sun Club have been told they can no longer strip off for their long-running monthly dip at Mounts Baths in the town and say they are "distressed and bewildered" at the decision. They have hired out the entire venue for their two-and-a-half hour swim and sauna sessions since 1982.‌But now they've been told it's a strictly clothes-on policy. Everyone Active, who now run the Northants centre, say they pulled the plug on the group's regular booking because no lifeguards are willing to work during the time the club takes to the water.‌Members pay £10 each for the swim which also includes access to the centre's sauna, steam room, plunge pool and Turkish baths. No alternatives have been put forward, leaving organisers heartbroken - and contemplating their next step.The naturist group were stunned when they received an email from the new general manager just two days before their usual meet up last month telling them that they were banned from swimming naked.‌Maggie Moreton, chairwoman of the organisation, told the Mirror that the sudden decision flies in the face of the leisure centre's mission to get people socialising - and keeping fit.She said: "This is very difficult to understand. The world wants people to socialise, to be cheerful, to exercise and to support local businesses and we've been told we're not welcome. It's very sad and there's a lot of upset people being alienated by this decision."Like most naturists are, we're a nice group who treat everyone with respect. Our sessions were totally private, we've had the booking for decades, we had our dip after everyone goes home, and we always attract fantastic numbers.‌"We often get between 60 and 70 people, of all ages and all nationalities. To have it suddenly snatched away from us, after more than 40 years, is bewildering. People make friends for life and they keep active and social. What's the problem?"She says she struggles to accept the staffing excuse and added: "They say they can't find lifeguards all of a sudden. But it doesn't seem to have been an issue at all since 1982. I'm sure it wouldn't have cost too much more to find one for a few hours once a month.‌"What's our next steps? Well they don't seem to have reacted at all to our complaints. There's potentially the legal route, and we have to consider what we do next so who knows. There's nowhere else for us to go."The club’s treasurer David Farnsworth, 51, slammed the decision and said: “It’s discrimination because the management simply don’t like the idea of what we are doing.‌"We have been holding these monthly naturist swims for decades with no issues and we now have more than 190 members who are bitterly disappointed.“Naked swimming is freeing, it’s not sexual but we feel we’ve been discriminated against because one or two people simply don’t understand what we are about. It is all so sudden. The club has jumped through every hoop in relation to risk assessments and safeguarding. The club has been holding these events for members for 44 years so they know what they’re doing."‌New leisure operators Everyone Active took over the pool's previous operators Trilogy Active in April the group were told all future bookings were cancelled.The company, which runs more than 230 leisure centres across the UK, stood by the nude swim ban.Simon Fearn, regional contract manager, said: "We're currently unable to offer naturist swimming sessions at Mounts Baths because we have been unable to secure the staffing agreements needed to operate them.Article continues below"We understand this is a change from what's been offered before and may be disappointing to those who took part. If circumstances change in the future, we'll review the position and update customers accordingly.”
