The Water Resources Department (WRD) is set to begin desilting waterways in and around Chennai on Monday as part of its annual monsoon preparedness measures.A press release said Minister for Water Resources and Rural Development N. Anand is likely to inaugurate the work. He is expected to inspect the works at six locations over the three days.Chennai has nearly 60 km of major waterways and water courses running for 54 km besides water bodies spread across about 3,700 hectares in and around the city. The exercise is aimed at reducing the risk of flooding during rainy days.The work would be carried out in partnership with corporates, volunteers, and non-governmental organisations, and completed ahead of the Northeast monsoon. The Minister is scheduled to inspect works along the Cooum river and Okkiam Maduvu on Monday, the release said. Published - July 25, 2026 07:35 pm IST
