Robert Maudsley, the quadruple killer dubbed 'Hannibal the Cannibal', has gone on hunger strike again in a grim protest about his prison conditions.Britain's longest serving prisoner, Maudsley has just spent his 52nd consecutive birthday behind bars. He turned 73 last month and it was his second birthday in Whitemoor, Cambs., after decades in Wakefield jail.He has asked to move back to his 'glass cage' in the West Yorkshire prison dubbed 'Monster Mansion,' because it holds so many dangerous inmates.‌He has now spent almost 48 years in a single cell, the equivalent of more than 17,500 consecutive days in solitary confinement. But his request to return to Wakefield has so far been denied. He has been on a hunger strike refusing prison food for two months, which has sparked fears about his health due to his age.He also went on hunger strike to protest his move from Wakefield last year. He told his girlfriend, Londoner Loveinia Grace MacKenney, 71, that he feels "threatened" and is refusing to cooperate with prison staff.‌"He feels intimidated," she told the Mirror. "He feels bullied and he is at an age when he is extremely vulnerable. He is refusing to interact with staff because he cannot trust them. He does not want to see the psychologist."They want to discuss the trauma of his early life when he was attacked and abused and he does not want to go through that again."He has not had any visits and is refusing food again, he has gone on hunger strike, refusing food for the past two months."He will not see any nurses or medical staff, he has had enough. I am very worried about his health and state of mind."‌Loveinia, who speaks to her partner every week and writes to him regularly, added: "He does not sound like the same person, he just sounds very weak."She said his exercise was now in a tiny 10ft x 10ft yard with 20 ft high walls, and his time in the shower is cut short. The man she calls 'Bob' is said to have a high IQ and enjoyed reading and listening to classical music in Wakefield, where his previous crimes led to the nickname 'Hannibal the Cannibal'.However, prison staff removed his TV and radio during a dispute there, and he was moved to Whitemoor in April last year.‌Maudsley became the UK's longest serving prisoner after the death of Moors murderer Ian Brady, who served 51 years, in 2017.Maudsley was sentenced to life in 1974 for the manslaughter of John Farrell, a 30-year-old child abuser. He then killed three men behind bars. After killing his last two victims, he was said to have told a prison guard: “There’ll be two short on the roll call." He earned his 'Hannibal the Cannibal' nickname after one victim was found with a spoon in his skull, leading to rumours - later proven false - that he had eaten the man's brains. Maudsley spent decades at Wakefield, with special measures in place so prison staff could see him before they entered his cell.‌Due to the Perspex window on his cell, he has been compared to the fictional character Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins in "The Silence of the Lambs."The Ministry of Justice refused to comment on his latest hunger strike, and his complaints about visits from friends and relatives, saying they do not comment on individual prisoners.A source stressed that Maudsley has access to a phone, has half an hour per day outside for exercise, and is allowed a daily shower.
