SA launches South Africa’s new online Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination authorisation system, enabling livestock owners to apply for permission to vaccinate their own animals as part of efforts to curb outbreaks and restore the country’s FMD-free status.
Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp has launched a new online self-vaccination authorisation system that will allow livestock owners to apply for permission to vaccinate their own animals against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), marking a significant step in South Africa’s efforts to contain outbreaks and restore confidence in the livestock sector.
The Department of Agriculture announced on Saturday that the live digital platform gives cattle owners and farm managers greater responsibility in managing FMD risks while ensuring compliance with biosecurity and reporting requirements.
The move follows recent efforts by government and industry stakeholders to strengthen disease control measures after FMD outbreaks disrupted livestock movement and threatened agricultural exports.
“The launch of this system means that the owners and managers of cattle will be able to perform voluntary vaccination of their livestock against FMD,” Aucamp said.
