UN chief in Syria, first such visit since 2009
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Syria on July 25 for the first visit by a serving U.N. chief since 2009, with talks expected to focus on the country’s political transition following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani received Guterres and his delegation at Damascus International Airport, state news agency SANA reported.
Guterres is expected to spend three days in Syria and meet President Ahmed al-Sharaa, government officials and representatives of civil society, including organizations working on women’s issues.
He is also scheduled to address Syria’s new transitional parliament, which held its first session earlier this month.
