Shares of companies in the healthcare sector advanced as investors sought defensive and value-oriented sectors after a volatile week for the markets.
Novo Nordisk is asking a U.S. court to preliminarily halt rival Eli Lilly from advertising weight-loss drugs, days after accusing the Indianapolis drugmaker of using deceptive ads to mislead consumers in a lawsuit. The preliminary injunction request escalates legal proceedings initiated earlier this week by Novo Nordisk that accuse Eli Lilly of using outdated studies to promote its branded GLP-1 drugs, Mounjaro and Zepbound.
Shares of Tenet Healthcare climbed after the company reported second quarter earnings that exceeded Wall Street expectations and lifted its outlook for the rest of the year. The company now expects full-year adjusted earnings between $20.30 and $21.69 a share on net operating revenue between $21.9 billion and $22.5 billion. The company reported a second-quarter profit of $826 million, or $9.84 a share, compared with a profit of $288 million, or $3.14 a share, a year earlier.
Measles cases in the U.S. during the first seven months of this year have surpassed all of 2025's tally, setting a new three-decade high. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday reported 2,318 confirmed cases of measles so far this year, exceeding the number of cases in all of 2025. Its rapid spread illustrates a new normal in the U.S., where falling vaccination rates have made more communities vulnerable to the highly infectious disease that the country declared eliminated more than 25 years ago.
