Noam Galai / Getty Images for ParamountJuly 24, 2026 Updated 4:02 pm EDTLead NFL on CBS analyst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated (OWI) Thursday evening in Wisconsin, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.Romo was released shortly after being booked and given a court date of Sept. 21.According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, a first-offense OWI carries a penalty of $150-$300, plus a $435 OWI surcharge. An OWI is Wisconsin’s equivalent to what other states call a DUI (driving under the influence) or DWI (driving while intoxicated).Romo grew up in Burlington, Wis., about 40 miles southeast of Milwaukee. He graduated from Burlington High School and went on to play college football at Eastern Illinois. Romo signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2003 and took over the starting job in 2006. He is the franchise’s all-time leader in touchdown passes with 248.
Romo retired from the NFL after the 2016 season and joined CBS as the lead color commentator in the booth next to play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz. CBS declined to comment on Romo’s arrest when reached by The Athletic.Romo had spent the week playing in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf tournament at West Bend Country Club in West Bend, Wis.
