The number of measles cases in 2026 officially passed last year’s record.
According to the latest CDC data, there have been 2,318 cases so far in 2026 — nearly 30 more cases than last year’s 2,289. This is the highest number of cases in one year since 1991, according to the CDC.
“Ongoing measles outbreaks in the United States, resulting in illness and hospitalizations, are an unnecessary and preventable tragedy given that we have a safe and effective vaccine,” William Moss, MD, MPH, executive director of the International Vaccine Access Center at Johns Hopkins University, told Healio.
At this point in the year, cases have popped up in 43 states and Washington, D.C. The CDC reported that 93% of cases were outbreak-related with 782 cases from one of the 35 outbreaks that began and another 1,371 from outbreaks that began in 2025. The CDC reported that 16 cases came from international travelers.
