Raging wildfires have forced the evacuation of the whole of the Cap Ferret peninsula in southwest France, with hundreds of people escaping by boat.
Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from the popular tourist destination, west of Bordeaux.
Meanwhile, Spain has declared a national emergency as wildfires burn out of control in areas close to the capital Madrid – with two of them merging.
The Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia are also grappling with a wildfire emergency, as scorching temperatures and strong sirocco winds spark dozens of blazes threatening towns, hospitals and infrastructure.
