Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has reiterated Ankara’s support for a two-state solution for Cyprus during a meeting with Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ Personal Envoy on Cyprus.
Ahead of Guterres’ upcoming visit to Cyprus, Fidan said Turkey, “as the motherland and a guarantor power, considers that the most realistic solution to the Cyprus issue is the coexistence of two states on the island.”
Guterres’ visit to Cyprus, scheduled to start July 27, is seen as a last-ditch attempt by the outgoing top UN official – his mandate ends at the end of the year – to set in motion a solution for the 52-year-old division of the island.
Fidan argued that approaches which, in Turkey’s view, fail to recognize “the sovereign equality and equal international status” of the two communities on the island do not contribute to resolving the Cyprus issue.
