Sony pairs its HD Noise Canceling Processor QN1 with an Integrated Processor V1 in the XM5, and the two of them run all eight mics simultaneously. That combination does the best job of canceling out the high and mid-frequency sounds you hear on airplanes or from people talking around you. There is also a built-in feature called Auto NC Optimizer that adjusts the amount of cancellation depending on how the headphones are sitting on your head and what is happening in your surrounding area, so you don’t have to go through menus and adjustments every time you move from a plane to an office.
The 30mm driver in each earcup was built specifically for these, with a light, rigid design that improves high-frequency response. DSEE Extreme restores detail that gets lost when audio is compressed, and LDAC over Bluetooth 5.2 carries more data than standard codecs for high-resolution files. The Sony Sound Connect app has an EQ if you want to shape the sound yourself.
