Joe Root is in line to be named as England’s new Test captain – possibly until the end of next summer’s Ashes.
It is understood the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have not finalised their decision on who takes over from the retired Ben Stokes.
However, The i Paper has been told that Root is now the clear favourite and is set to be installed in the job in the coming days.
Stokes announced his shock retirement from international cricket during last month’s final Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.
England lost that series 2-1 and Brendon McCullum was sacked from his role as Test coach in the weeks afterwards.
