Commercially available data can help nefarious actors track defence sector employees, authorities say
Germany’s domestic intelligence agency on Thursday warned that security and defence companies face a heightened risk of espionage, sabotage and potential attacks linked to Russia.
The agency said in a security advisory that the threat remained high following a March agreement between Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to deepen German-Ukrainian cooperation.
It said a recent publication by Russia’s Defence Ministry listing German companies should be viewed as a reaction to the agreement.
The advisory highlighted growing concerns that Russian state actors and their proxies are targeting defence-related businesses and military infrastructure in Germany and warned that targeted attacks against individuals, particularly senior executives, cannot be ruled out depending on the course of the war in Ukraine.
