So there are some very fancy things out these days. I’m talking about super high-tech gadgets and bits and bobs that I already know I won’t be able to set up without watching nineteen YouTube videos, three tutorials on another platform and eventually phoning someone to rescue me after the whole debacle.
I was watching a film the other night, set somewhere in the 1950s I think, where the wife received a brand new electric carving knife for her birthday. I mean, how lucky is she? Was she using it for some wonderfully niche hobby? Nope. It was for the household. It always makes me laugh that buying your wife a vacuum cleaner back then was considered a very thoughtful birthday gift. Anyway, back to the carving knife. It was the hottest gadget in town. Imagine dropping a NutriBullet or a smartphone into that era and sitting back to watch everyone’s reactions. To be fair, that’s me in the present day with half the gadgets surrounding us.
Remember getting a call on the landline from the fella you met at the ice rink over the weekend? You had to sit right there in the middle of the dining room while the whole family pretended not to listen. And don’t even think about making any real plans over that phone call. Those had to be arranged at school, in person or by carrier pigeon. Otherwise your elaborate story about going to the movies with the girls while you were actually heading off to the clubs was never going to work. These days the youngsters seem to be doing turmeric shots instead of tequila shots and heading off for a sunrise hike at about the same time we used to crawl into bed after a night out. I’m not being judgy. I’m just fascinated.
