A Kuwaiti State Security Court of Appeal has overturned a 10-year prison sentence imposed on a Kuwaiti citizen convicted of spying-related offences and sentenced him to life imprisonment instead.
The defendant was found guilty of attempting to spy for Iran and Hezbollah, meeting with their leaders, and receiving training in weapons handling and drone operations in Kuwait under the supervision of members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and Hezbollah in the Iranian city of Qom. The court ruled that his actions harmed Kuwait’s national interests.
In a separate case, the court sentenced another Kuwaiti citizen to three years in prison after convicting him of insulting the Prophet Muhammad’s companions, insulting Shia citizens, inciting sectarian strife and spreading panic. The charges stemmed from a phone call he made to a bank, during which he provided false information during the period of Iranian attacks on Kuwait.
The same court also overturned a three-year prison sentence handed to a Kuwaiti woman accused of inciting sectarian tensions through WhatsApp and Snapchat. It decided to suspend her punishment and acquitted her of a separate charge of promoting Hezbollah’s ideology.
