NFL training camps are underway, and there are still several veteran free agents available for teams in need of roster help.Receiver is one position with some particularly interesting names. Keenan Allen, Stefon Diggs and Deebo Samuel are all without teams, for example. All three ranked in the top 60 in our free-agency rankings from March.Let’s play matchmaker and find the best fits for some of the intriguing veteran receivers who remain on the market.Keenan AllenBest landing spot: New Orleans SaintsAllen signed with the Los Angeles Chargers early in training camp last year, and he went on to have a productive season after reuniting with quarterback Justin Herbert. Allen led the Chargers in receptions with 81. He finished with 777 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Allen turned 34 in April, but his game will continue to age well. Allen relies more on technique and savvy than elite athleticism. The Saints are a compelling fit for a couple of reasons.Saints coach Kellen Moore was the Chargers’ offensive coordinator in 2023. That season, Allen had one of the best years of his career, setting the franchise single-season receptions record in 13 games. He had 108 catches for 1,234 yards and seven touchdowns. Moore will know how to utilize Allen. Additionally, the Saints are lacking experience in their receiver room behind No. 1 option Chris Olave. The Saints drafted three receivers in April, including Jordyn Tyson in the first round and Bryce Lance in the fourth round. They also have Devaughn Vele (25 catches for the Saints in 2025) and Ja’Lynn Polk (12 career catches). Allen would bring a proven skill set as quarterback Tyler Shough enters Year 2.Allen has spent all but one season of his NFL career in Southern California. It’s fair to question if he would even be willing to make a move to New Orleans for 2026. But from a football standpoint, this marriage makes a ton of sense. As usual, the Saints are tight up against the cap, so they would likely have to get creative with the structure to make a contract work.Stefon DiggsBest landing spot: Atlanta FalconsDiggs played a key role in the New England Patriots’ surprise run to the Super Bowl in 2025. The Patriots nonetheless cut him this offseason one season into a three-year deal. His release came after Diggs faced felony charges of strangulation or suffocation stemming from a December incident involving his private chef. He was found not guilty of those charges in court in early May. In June, the NFL concluded its investigation and informed Diggs there was insufficient evidence to support a personal conduct policy violation. Therefore, Diggs will not face a suspension. Diggs is still a valuable player as a possession receiver. He can find soft spots against zone and create opportunities in scramble drills. Diggs was a security blanket for Patriots quarterback Drake Maye last season.The Falcons have an excellent collection of young star skill players between receiver Drake London, running back Bijan Robinson and tight end Kyle Pitts. The Falcons extended both London and Pitts this offseason. They could certainly use another receiver to fit with London in new coach Kevin Stefanski’s offense. Diggs would be a logical complement to London, who thrives outside the numbers in contested-catch situations.The Falcons drafted Zachariah Branch in the third round. Branch is explosive and projects as a YAC threat. Diggs can play inside and outside, which would leave slot snaps available for Branch. London, Diggs and Branch would form a well-rounded trio for whichever quarterback wins the starting job between Michael Penix and Tua Tagovailoa.Diggs and Stefanski also spent five seasons together from 2015-19 with the Minnesota Vikings. Stefanski was promoted from interim offensive coordinator to offensive coordinator in 2019. That season, Diggs finished with 1,130 receiving yards and six touchdowns.Deebo SamuelBest landing spot: Los Angeles RamsSamuel spent one season with the Washington Commanders after landing there via trade in March 2025. He is coming off his lowest scrimmage-yards output since 2020. While Samuel still has viable traits, he is best served in a rotational and complementary role. Samuel can still impact the game on manufactured touches, including jets sweeps, screens and even traditional handoffs.Sean McVay feels like the perfect coach to get the most of Samuel at this stage. Samuel would slot in as the No. 3 receiver in the Rams offense behind Davante Adams and Puka Nacua. He would not have to shoulder a huge load as a true receiver. Instead, Samuel would fill a role that leans into his strengths as a dangerous ball carrier. Samuel had his most productive seasons under Kyle Shanahan with the San Francisco 49ers. Joining an offense from the same tree is quite logical.Brandin CooksBest landing spot: Miami DolphinsThe Dolphins have a new regime in place with coach Jeff Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan. This offseason has been primarily about cleaning up the books and taking the necessary medicine. The Dolphins cut Tagovailoa, receiver Tyreek Hill and edge rusher Bradley Chubb, among others. They traded Jaylen Waddle to the Denver Broncos. The result: a league-leading $179.2 million in dead money, according to Over the Cap. The Dolphins are spending almost 60 percent of their cap on players not on the roster.The Dolphins did make a sizable swing at quarterback, signing Malik Willis to a three-year, $67.5 million contract. This seemed to run counter to all the other tear-down moves the Dolphins made throughout the offseason. It does not feel as though the Dolphins are setting Willis up for success given how they have gutted the receiver room. The Dolphins have Jalen Tolbert, Tutu Atwell and Malik Washington on the roster along with three draft picks, Chris Bell, Caleb Douglas and Kevin Coleman.Cooks is a potential cheap option that would bring some professional production to a room needing it. Cooks landed with the Buffalo Bills for the stretch run last season and had some promising moments. He is a veteran route-runner who can still threaten defenses in the deep part of the field.Tyreek HillBest landing spot: TBDHill remains one of the flashiest names available among free agents, so we did not want to leave him off our list. But it is impossible to predict a landing spot given his injury recovery. Hill suffered a devastating season-ending knee injury in Week 4 last season.On Thursday, Hill posted a video to social media during which he said he has “no power” in his left leg.“I ain’t going to tell you what my timeline is,” Hill added. “But timeline looking real good right now, man.”It could be some time before Hill is even ready to sign with a team. If that eventually happens, he would likely have to sign a cheap deal with heavy incentives. We will have to circle back on Hill in the months to come.
