President Bola Tinubu has approved a major expansion of the Nigerian Army, increasing its operational structure from eight to 12 divisions and authorising the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria's security architecture and improve the military's operational effectiveness.

According to the Presidency, the expansion is aimed at improving command and control, decentralising military operations, enhancing border security, strengthening the protection of critical national infrastructure, improving counter-insurgency and internal security operations, and ensuring faster military responses to emerging security threats across the country.
The Presidency said the decision reflects Tinubu's commitment, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to strengthening Nigeria's defence capabilities amid the country's persistent security challenges.
