Mumbai: Swedish-founded cosmetics company Oriflame is selling its manufacturing facilities in India to Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals for Rs 56 crore, joining the growing list of international brands scaling back their India operations. The deal marks Akums's entry into colour cosmetics manufacturing and its first push into the category since its 2024 listing. The transaction covers Oriflame's plants at Roorkee, Uttarakhand, and Noida, Uttar Pradesh, along with a leased warehouse in Noida.Marketing, sales and trademark rights for Oriflame's products in India are excluded and will stay with the company, which has struck a long-term manufacturing arrangement with Akums. India, where Oriflame has operated for over three decades, remains a growth priority, said the company's chief executive Anna Malmhake.Oriflame is not alone. Newell Brands sold the Reynolds pen brand to Doms Industries last month, while AkzoNobel divested its Dulux paints business in India to JSW Group last year.For Akums, the deal is part of a push into fast-growing categories beyond pharmaceuticals manufacturing. India's cosmetics and personal care market, valued at about $20 billion, is expected to double over the next decade on rising demand, e-commerce growth and the influence of beauty influencers.
