Germany-headquartered science and technology giant Merck will continue to deepen its presence in China's healthcare sector, as the country's strong innovation capacity, vast market potential and rapid advances in artificial intelligence create long-term growth opportunities, a senior executive said.

"China's most distinctive strength lies in its innovation capacity," Andre Musto, managing director and general manager of Merck Healthcare China, said in an exclusive interview with China Daily.

Over the past decade, China has made remarkable strides in innovation across a broad range of sectors, while its vast market, considerable growth potential and leading position in AI and digitalization have made it increasingly attractive to global healthcare companies, Musto said.

He identified "China speed" as one of the country's defining characteristics, saying the rapid pace of development can be seen throughout the pharmaceutical value chain — from early-stage research and clinical development to regulatory approvals and commercialization.
