President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Chief Tonobok Okowa, has said he is satisfied with the strength of Nigeria’s athletics squad heading into the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, which opens today, and reaffirmed the federation’s target of seven gold medals.
Track and field events will run for six days, from Monday, July 27, to Saturday, August 1, at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, according to a statement issued by the federation’s media coordinator.
Okowa, who is leading the federation’s contingent to the Games, said the arrival of leading names such as women’s 100m hurdles world record holder Tobi Amusan, sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi, Favour Ashe, Olympics 400m finalist Samuel Ogazi, Rosemary Chukwuma, shot put veteran Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and javelin thrower Chinecherem Nnamdi had bolstered the federation’s medal ambitions.
“The number of top Nigerian athletes participating at the Games is encouraging. This is an excellent spirit, and it signalled a new spirit for them to represent their fatherland at international competitions,” Okowa said.
The AFN president added that the camp also featured United States-based athletes Alaba Akintola, Adekalu Fakorede, Udodi Onwuzurike, hurdler Nathaniel Ezekiel, Edidiong Okon Udo, Temitope Adeshina, Prestina Ochonogor, Ruth Usoro, veteran Patience George-Okon, Chidera Ezeakor, Oyesade Oyetade, Obiageri Amaechi, Jessica Orji and decathlete Jami Schlueter.
