The Republican-led US House of Representatives on Thursday passed a resolution directing President Donald Trump to halt US military action against Iran unless authorised by Congress. The measure, however, is largely symbolic and is not expected to stop the ongoing conflict.The resolution, introduced by Representative Pramila Jayapal, was approved by a 214-208 vote, with four Republicans joining Democrats in support. Congress has passed similar war powers resolutions in recent months, but they have not resulted in an end to the conflict.Republicans hold narrow majorities in both the House and the Senate. On Thursday, Trump warned of "major military punishment" for Iran and its Houthi allies after Yemen's Houthi fighters struck two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, widening the conflict to another key global shipping route.Separately, the US military carried out another overnight round of airstrikes on Iran, two weeks after the collapse of an interim truce. Iran responded by firing at US bases in neighbouring countries.
