A student leader from Osmania University was detained on Thursday morning ahead of the day-long protest near Dharna Chowk in Indira Park by Women and Transgender JAC marking the continuing solidarity protests in Hyderabad against the Delhi police’s crackdown on CJP protesters earlier this week. The protest was organised peacefully.“This protest is not just about students. It is about their future. I have come here to express solidarity with them,” said Dr. Suhas Mareedu, who turned up at the protest with a poster demanding end to commercialisation of education and making it accessible to all. Other students brought paper and sketch pens to draw and paint commentary about the state of affairs in the country.Earlier in the day, Mahipal, a student affiliated with the Disha Students Organisation, was picked up near the university campus in the morning and later released.According to Mahipal, two men in plain clothes stopped him near the campus, asked for his name and took away his phone when he sought to know their identities. He alleged that he was first taken to the Osmania University police station before being shifted to Amberpet police station, where he was held for a few hours before being released around noon.He claimed that the police informed him he was being detained as a preventive measure for allegedly raising slogans and mobilising students during a solidarity protest held on the university campus a day earlier in support of the CJP protesters.Mahipal said his friends and fellow students were initially unaware of his whereabouts and that he was released after pressure from students and others. The Hyderabad Police, however, denied detaining him. A senior police officer said Mahipal had only been called for questioning and was allowed to leave after some time.
