China's national flag flutters at a business district in Beijing.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday urged the US side to respect China's core interests and uphold the one-China principle.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Manila, the Philippines.

Noting that this is a pivotal year for China-US relations, Wang said the two heads of state held a successful and historic meeting in Beijing, agreeing on a vision of building a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability and outlining the direction for joint efforts.

This represents significant progress made by the two major countries in exploring a path of peaceful coexistence, serves the fundamental interests of both peoples and meets the shared expectations of the international community, said Wang.
