Super Micro Computer Inc.

(NASDAQ:SMCI) gave investors an unexpected reason to cheer on Tuesday—and it wasn't revenue.

The company said fourth-quarter revenue is expected to come in "near the low end" of its previously guided range of $11 billion to $12.5 billion.

Under normal circumstances, that might have weighed on the stock.

Instead, investors zeroed in on two other numbers: preliminary gross margins of 15% to 17%, nearly double the company's previous guidance of 8.2% to 8.4%, and "more than $60 billion" in new AI infrastructure orders.
