IBM has signed an agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories to expand its quantum computing research capabilities through HRL’s expertise in silicon-spin qubit engineering, sensing, and advanced materials.

HRL’s researchers and technologies will complement IBM’s existing superconducting qubit efforts while supporting work across quantum computing, quantum sensing, and quantum networking.

Boeing and General Motors, HRL’s current owners, will continue collaborating with IBM on quantum applications and advanced technology development after the acquisition.

HRL is a private company jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors.
