The programme, presented by BC Hydro and the Province of British Columbia, will more than triple BC Hydro’s existing network and introduce larger charging hubs, higher charging capacities and new customer features. The company currently operates 917 charging ports across 190 locations. Over the next decade, the utility plans to install new charging hubs in communities throughout British Columbia, along major highway corridors and in high-demand urban areas.

The next phase of the network will feature a standardised site design intended to improve reliability, accessibility and maintenance.

BC Hydro also plans to build larger charging hubs at strategic locations to reduce waiting times during periods of high demand. New ‘signature’ sites will include additional amenities such as washrooms, while selected showcase locations will offer canopies and digital signage.

The utility will also upgrade charging performance across the network. Going forward, 200 kW DC chargers will become the standard, while selected high-demand locations will receive 400 kW ultra-fast chargers. The rollout will also introduce plug-and-charge capability and tap-to-pay functionality. The locations use BC Hydro’s energy-based pricing model approved by the B.C. Utilities Commission.
