The United States and Saudi Arabia signed a nuclear agreement that would allow the kingdom to develop a civilian nuclear programme.
The Trump administration did not release details of the deal.
However, in a post on social media, US President Donald Trump said the agreement does not allow for uranium enrichment. He added that the deal "will be approved, but is totally subject to Saudi Arabia joining the very respected and successful Abraham Accords."
That would require the kingdom to normalise relations with Israel, which could prove difficult. . Saudi Arabia has repeatedly said it will not do so until there is a pathway to Palestinian statehood. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made clear that such a move is not on the table.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Minister of Energy Abdulaziz bin Salman formally signed the agreement, along with "bilateral safeguards" against non-proliferation.
