The fighter crashed near the town of Zvenigorod. Eyewitnesses told Russian outlet Astra that the aircraft exploded after the pilot ejected.
“The plane crashed, and the parachute was visible nearby,” local residents told Astra.The cause of the crash has not yet been disclosed by Russian authorities.The Su-57 is Russia’s most advanced fifth-generation multirole fighter. It made its maiden flight in 2010, but serial production was delayed for years before entering limited service.The aircraft is designed for air superiority missions and strikes against ground and naval targets. Russia says the Su-57 features stealth technology, advanced avionics, and the ability to carry a wide range of precision-guided weapons.However, Western analysts have repeatedly questioned both the aircraft’s actual stealth capabilities and the slow pace of its production.Russia is believed to operate only about 30 Su-57 fighter jets, far fewer than its goal of delivering 76 additional aircraft by 2027. The stealth fighters have rarely been used in combat against Ukraine, likely because Moscow fears losing one to Ukrainian air defenses.
