—The conviction. Brazil’s Supreme Court sentenced former navy commander Admiral Almir Garnier Santos to 24 years in prison in September 2025 for taking part in the plot to overturn the 2022 election.
—The distinction. He is the only one of the three armed-forces chiefs convicted; testimony held that he alone agreed to put the navy at the coup’s disposal.
