Key Facts

—The sale. Grupo Cibest, the holding company of Colombia’s Bancolombia, sold its Panama retail bank Banistmo for about US$1.4 billion, closing in mid-June 2026.

—The buyer. Banistmo went to Banco La Hipotecaria, part of the Salvadoran group Inversiones Cuscatlán.

—The twist. Despite exiting retail, Cibest is not leaving Panama; it is expanding a regional banking, investment and capital-markets hub there.
