The animal was discovered by a woman driving along a highway on Monday, 20 July, who then contacted emergency services. A 911 operator informed her that nothing could be done immediately, as tranquilising the bear on the pole posed a risk of it falling. The New Mexico Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed that the bear was electrocuted. The animal died before wildlife officials could safely rescue it from the pylon.
