Air India will soon connect Amritsar with Delhi under the hub and spoke scheme, smoothing customs and immigration process for international travellers.The scheme was inaugurated at Varanasi on June 25 and is part of civil aviation ministry’s ambition to develop hubs in India.“A new chapter in seamless international connectivity is set to begin at Amritsar Airport with the upcoming ‘hub & spoke model’. In a single check-in at Amritsar and seamless access to international destinations via Delhi, the initiative will make international travel easier through streamlined check-in and immigration processes, while strengthening connectivity for Tier-II and Tier-III cities,” Airport Authority of India said in an X post on Wednesday.At present, Amritsar has direct flights to Dubai, Sharjah, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, London and Birmingham. Last fiscal Amritsar airport handled 9.97 lakh international passengers, a decline of 13.5 per cent over FY 25.With a large Punjabi diaspora in Australia and Canada, Amritsar is also an origin for connecting traffic flows via Delhi and overseas hubs.Air India did not respond to an email query. The airline’s managing director and CEO Campbell Wilson had earlier said the airline aims to make international travel more accessible for passengers from smaller cities. Air India will progressively connect more cities to its hubs in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru with “easy connect” flights, it had said last month. These include Ahmedabad, Chennai, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kochi, Patna, Vadodara and Visakhapatnam.Published on July 23, 2026
