This new traffic law could cost businesses more than they realise

Failing to comply with AARTO could have wider operational consequences than simply paying fines.

The Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) Act officially came into force in 62 municipalities following President Cyril Ramaphosa's proclamation, marking the second phase of the national rollout.

The Act is expected to be extended to a further 151 municipalities later this year, while the demerit point system will only be introduced in 2027.

MasterDrive CEO Eugene Herbert said AARTO is no longer a future compliance issue for businesses operating vehicles in affected municipalities.

"It is an active legal reality with immediate administrative and financial implications, and the businesses responding fastest will be the ones best protected," Herbert said.
