AMD said it would invest up to $5 billion (£3.7bn) in AI start-up Anthropic in a deal dependent on Anthropic deploying AMD’s AI accelerator chips, which compete with those from market leader Nvidia.
Anthropic plans to buy and utilise 2 gigawatts of AMD’s Instinct MI450 Series GPUs in AMD’s Helios rack servers, the companies said, with the first gigawatt planned for deployment in the first half of next year.

Circular investment
AMD issued OpenAI with a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock, or about 10 percent of the company, with vesting milestones tied to Anthropic’s deployments and to AMD’s stock price.
