The British government announced on Wednesday, July 22, that it had temporarily evacuated its embassy staff from Iran due to the deteriorating security situation. The decision came hours after Donald Trump threatened to strike Iranian infrastructure if the Islamic Republic targeted commercial vessels.
In an official advisory, the UK government stated that, as a precautionary measure given the ongoing security environment, embassy personnel had been temporarily withdrawn from Iran, though embassy operations would continue remotely.
The statement noted that the UK government’s capacity to provide consular services within Iran was “severely limited” and that in-person assistance would not be available in the event of an emergency.
The British government warned its citizens that they should not expect to receive in-person consular support if they encountered difficulties while in Iran.
Pointing to regional security developments, the advisory highlighted that, since July 8, Iran had launched retaliatory attacks against U.S. military and civilian infrastructure across various parts of the region. It noted that the risk of further strikes and unpredictable escalation remained high.
