Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have reportedly averted what could have been a deadly incident after encountering a booby-trap improvised explosive device (IED) during a routine route clearance operation along the Cross Kauwa–Kekeno–Monguno Main Supply Route (MSR) in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to security analyst and counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred on Tuesday morning during a routine military patrol aimed at ensuring the safety of one of the critical supply routes used by both security personnel and civilians operating within the Lake Chad region.
According to intelligence sources, the explosion occurred at about 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, when troops of the 123 Special Forces Battalion were carrying out a routine Main Supply Route scanning patrol at Dowoshi village in Kukawa Local Government Area.
The sources told Makama that while conducting the patrol, the troops detected and inadvertently triggered a concealed booby-trap IED allegedly planted by terrorists along the route.
