MANILA, Philippines — In the first minister-level meeting between the Philippines and China in two years, its foreign ministers raised protests against each other — an indication of the rise in political and maritime tensions between the two Asian countries.
Philippine Foreign Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro, in her first in-person meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, raised a litany of grievances, including a July 20 confrontation after China Coast Guard personnel entered Ayungin (Second Thomas) Shoal. Wang, in return, protested the same incident but claimed it was Philippine soldiers who did the provocation.
