Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a three-day visit to Australia from 8–10 July 2026, the first time a prime minister from either India or Australia has made three visits to the other country. His visit symbolises India’s increasing interest in Australia, marking a further step in strengthening already-robust Australia–India relations and paving the way for new areas of cooperation.
Modi proudly characterised the visit as a ‘hat-trick’ in his address to a huge crowd of Indian diaspora cheering him at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium, where he was welcomed by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Victorian State Premier Jacinta Allan.
His visit symbolises that the Australia–India relationship has transformed from one marked by structural fragility and reactive policy shifts to one with the institutionalised trust capable of withstanding domestic political differences and strategic divergences.
Alongside a broad joint statement issued by the two prime ministers, two additional joint statements came out of the summit which committed to enhancing defence and security cooperation and strengthening energy security. The finalisation of export arrangements to supply Australian uranium for India’s nuclear power plants signifies that the relationship has reached new depths.
