The toll in flood-related incidents in Assam has risen to 41, said the state disaster management authority on Wednesday.More than 6.4 lakh persons in over 900 villages, spread across eleven districts, have been affected by the floods. The districts are Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Charaideo, Kamrup, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Dhemaji, Hojai, Kamrup Metropolitan and Sivasagar.Sivasagar was the worst-affected, with 328 villages being inundated.Of the 10 deaths between Tuesday and Wednesday, three each were reported in Sivasagar and Jorhat, two in Charaideo, and one each in Dhemaji and Karbi Anglong, the authorities said.More than 100 persons were reported missing, The Times of India reported. Rescue efforts had continued on Wednesday.Several rivers, including the Burhidihing, Dikhou and Dhansiri, were flowing above the danger level on Wednesday morning. The Disang river was flowing above the highest flood level.Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a cloudburst had triggered the “exceptionally heavy rainfall” in the upstream states of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, “with precipitation of 141% and 181% above normal, respectively”.“The resulting unprecedented discharge of floodwaters into Assam has inundated districts that have witnessed little to no flooding in recent history,” he said on Wednesday.Written by Nachiket Deuskar.
