July 23 (UPI) -- Tropical Storm Bertha made landfall near the Texas-Louisiana state line Thursday afternoon, with heavy rains in parts of coastal Texas, according to forecasters.
The center of the storm was about 40 miles southeast of Lake Charles, La., and about 75 miles northeast of Galveston, the National Hurricane Center said in its 1 p.m. CDT update. The storm was traveling west at 10 mph and had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, with higher gusts.
There was a tropical storm warning in effect for the Gulf Coast from Morgan City, La., to Sargent, Texas.
The NHC said Bertha is expected to continue to move westward through the next day or so, followed by a turn toward the west-southwest on Friday and is expected to weaken.
