A new poll released on Wednesday in the all-important primary state of New Hampshire revealed progressive firebrand Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) leading a crowded pack of potential nominees for the 2028 Democratic presidential ticket. Ocasio-Cortez has surged ahead of former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg among likely 2028 Democratic primary voters in the latest University of New Hampshire poll. When asked about the results, Ocasio-Cortez expressed her gratitude to voters for putting their confidence in her but emphasized what her main focus currently is. “I think there’s two things, one is that you know polls are polls, and a horse race is a horse race. I am, of course, I think very deeply humbled and grateful to you folks who participate and convey that confidence,” Ocasio-Cortez told reporters outside the Capitol on Wednesday.“I think my main focus is really genuinely just the midterms right now, and we have to make sure that we win this majority,” she continued. Ocasio-Cortez has not officially announced her intention to seek the Democratic nomination in 2028, but has consistently appeared in national polling within the top five of potential candidates. Other top candidates in national polling include California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris. New Hampshire is historically considered to be an early indication of a candidate’s success or failure, being that it is the second Democratic primary to take place every election year.
